LIVING ROOM MAKEOVER

The client who lived in the Southern Shire of Sydney contacted me after some time of trepidation regarding professional advice on decorating their living room.

They had built their home some 20 years ago and the main living area was a little worse for wear after several attempts to keep up with the constant use by grandchildren and family pets. The choice of pale colours for the module lounge and carpet highlighted the need for upgrade, one that kept in mind the tones and feel of the whole house.

The bones of the room were attended to first – skirting and architraves were added and the veneer shelving and storage unit were painted to match the existing shutters. The dated fireplace removed and painted in with the walls. The selection of carpet was very important, a sisal wool two tone weave bringing together the subtle beige/browns. The brief was to refurbish the large modular and replace the coffee table, keeping the room as uncluttered as possible. The finding of the original Art Deco armchair was the catalyst I needed. The selection of textiles and accessories became an enjoyable experience and journey for my client as we quickly agreed on colour and collectables that transformed their living room.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL

It was a wonderfully positive outcome!! Room is fabulous so happy with it and except for Trish I probably would never have picked the colour for the walls - I have always tended to go for more pale neutral colours - so glad Trish came up with Dulux 'Dreyfus' - same for brown lounge - probably would not have picked to go with a brown lounge but once we saw some of the fabrics it all just seemed to go so well together. A big thank you for introducing me to Orient House, Glebe where we got the coffee table and several of the other lounge room pieces. Same for the unique cabinet handles - would never have found them and they go so well, I love it all.

I enjoyed working with you and thanks for all the little 'tips' that you gave me.

INNER CITY TIMBER COTTAGE

The initial brief for an old tiny inner city worker's cottage when first visiting the client was to conserve and respect what she already had and yet find pieces that would be complementary to the renovations she had undertaken a few years ago. Keeping her personal art collection was important and certainly was a catalyst for the choices in colour and textiles.

Chairs were recovered in texture and colour, paintings were reframed and repositioned, a new floor rug, sofa and soft furnishings balanced into what became a subtle update. She wanted colour to be, "occasionally bold, and sometimes calm". She wanted, "disciplined (but not boring) input."

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL

Trish Hurst has a wonderful sense of colour, function and design. She doesn't use formulaic decorating routines– she takes you shopping and sends you ideas so that you can see and feel what would work. That way you get to make choices, guided by experience. I had an eclectic mix of furniture and personal items that needed pulling together in a manner that made sense to the way I want to live…… each room is different but all tone with each other, creating a sense of well-being. Surely what we all want from our living spaces?

THREE LEVEL SUBURBAN TOWNHOUSE

The client had decided to employ a professional to help them with the placement of existing larger pieces of furniture which needed a fresh approach in the small rooms, and help with what seemed like an overwhelming makeover of a 90's townhouse they had purchased and lived in for the past year. They certainly knew what they liked and as I could see both had an 'eye'.

A young couple with a small baby the initial brief was to start slowly within a budget with the soft furnishings and accessories in the living room, hoping to upgrade the dated bathrooms later moving through the dining and bedrooms at a gentle pace.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL

"We had lived in open plan for so long that when we moved into our new townhouse, we were a little unsure about what to do with the space. It felt boxy and the pre-existing colours were so drab and boring. We wanted a space that reflected our personalities but didn't know where to start.

Trish was a delight to work with, easy to talk to and full of great ideas. By updating a few items and adding others, our living space now looks and feels completely different, and we are thrilled with the results.

The kilim rug sourced by Trish is stunning - it was love at first sight! We also love our new cushions, they look fabulous and are 'so' comfortable. The fabrics work so well with the rug and we are thrilled to finally have some vibrant colour in the room. One of our favourite aspects is the wallpaper on the stairwell. Without Trish, we probably wouldn't have chosen it ourselves, but it works beautifully, and always elicits a "wow" from our guests."

FAMILY HOME

A complete decorating make-over for a large 7 bedroom home, the challenge was to work around the original building basics - shutters where installed in the kitchen and family room. A pleasurable experience transforming a wonderful home for a busy corporate couple with three teenage boys.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL

"When we bought our new home we knew that our current furniture would not be suitable and we did not like the interior style of the house as it was. We found Trish on the internet and started what was to be a very RAPID design, selection and deployment of our new interior design. Trish was amazing. She came to our rescue, listened to what we had to say, found us lots to choose from. She got it delivered on time, managed trades people when necessary and made it all happen.
One thing that Trish did better than anyone I have met was to get it to flow and know what will go with what. Her eye for colour is remarkable."

TOWNHOUSE

The job brief from the client was to turn this 1990's large harbourside townhouse into an executive environment to enjoy as a comfortable city base. Whilst some of the furniture was in place the challenge was to co-ordinate and pull together the open plan space. Consulting on the purchasing of several important pieces of art and placing quality furniture and fabrics was the basis to turning the space into a luxury living area.

Client Testimonial

"We felt that too many contempory interiors dehumanize our living spaces. We wanted to create a warm and welcoming feeling to our living spaces. Trish understood the brief and was able to deliver exactly what we wanted.

When you lead a busy life its so hard to find the time to search for those special pieces that make all the difference. Trish knew the places to go to, and therefore made the process so much more simple.

We wanted to create a warm welcoming interior which Trish was able to deliver - and the artwork she managed to locate (which we love) finishes off our décor beautifully"
